Selco Manufacturing Corp. offers custom-fabricated electrical enclosures and junction boxes for infrastructure and transit applications. Since our founding in 1907 as a trusted builder of the New York City subway system, we have evolved to serve the construction, rail transit, electrical, highway, industrial, and utility industries with structural and electrical products built for long-term reliability.

Our comprehensive electrical enclosure services cover design, material selection, cutting, forming, welding, and in-house finishing. The sections below cover the types of enclosures we fabricate, our NEMA-rated and fire-rated capabilities, and the key considerations that inform enclosure design and specifications.

Infrastructure Applications

Custom Electrical Enclosures for
Infrastructure Applications

Electrical enclosures are boxes, housings, or cabinets that protect switches, circuit boards, wiring, control panels, and other electrical components from dust, impact, inclement weather, moisture, and unauthorized access.

At Selco Manufacturing Corp., we fabricate durable electrical enclosures that are fire-resistant,
UL-compliant, and NEMA-rated. These units are used throughout utility, public works, transportation, and infrastructure facilities, stations, and structures.

Electrical enclosures are manufactured with materials and design features to accomplish different performance goals and meet industry requirements, including but not limited to:

Access control and security. Access control and security.

Transit, Utility, and Outdoor Installations

Electrical junction boxes need to withstand ongoing exposure to the elements, weather, and harsh or fluctuating environmental conditions. For outdoor applications, boxes can be designed and manufactured with materials including galvanized steel, aluminum, or stainless steel, as well as gaskets, brackets, mounting hardware, seam-welded construction, and durable fasteners that resist corrosion and seal out dust, debris, and liquids.

NEMA-Rated and Fire-Rated Enclosures

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) defines ratings for electrical enclosures, cables, and motors to help users match the right types of components to specific environmental conditions.

NEMA-rated and fire-rated electrical enclosures and junction boxes provide exceptional protection in operating conditions that are prone to fire hazards, direct or indirect liquid ingress, dust and debris contamination, explosion hazards, high temperatures, hazardous chemical exposure and more.

NEMA 4X and NEMA 6P Enclosures

Enclosures manufactured to NEMA 4X and NEMA 6P requirements are widely used in transportation, infrastructure, utility, marine, and other industrial settings.

A NEMA 4X enclosure protects electrical and electronic components in outdoor and corrosive environments. It guards against rain, hose-directed water, windblown dust, and external ice formation, and adds resistance to rust and chemical exposure.

NEMA 4X enclosures provide a degree of protection against:

  • Ingress of solid foreign objects like dust, dirt, or fibers.
  • Ingress of water due to weather conditions or hose spray.
  • Corrosion of the enclosure and its contents.
  • Formation of ice on the outside of the enclosure.
NEMA 4X

A NEMA 6P enclosure is a submersible, heavy-duty enclosure suited for indoor or outdoor use. It offers the highest level of protection in the NEMA family, guarding equipment against falling dirt, dust, hose-directed water, ice formation, external corrosion, and prolonged submersion.

NEMA 6P enclosures provide a degree of protection against:

  • Ingress of solid foreign objects like dust, dirt, or fibers.
  • Formation of ice on the outside of the enclosure.
  • Corrosion of the enclosure and its contents.
  • Damage or ingress of moisture due to prolonged submersion (in limited depths).
NEMA 6P

In addition to these common NEMA ratings, Selco can manufacture enclosures that meet any other NEMA rating.

UL Fire-Rated and Life-Safety Boxes

UL Fire-Rated and Life-Safety Boxes

UL fire-rated and life-safety boxes are specifically designed to protect critical electrical systems during emergency scenarios. They not only maintain circuit integrity during fire events, but also support emergency lighting, alarms, and communication systems. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) evaluates these enclosures for thermal endurance, structural integrity, and reliability, and they are
code-compliant.

Electrical Junction Box & Enclosure Fabrication Services

Integrated and Fully Assembled Systems

Selco Manufacturing Corp. also provides integrated, fully assembled electrical junction box systems that ensure continuity of quality in manufacturing and assembly and reduce on-site installation and labor requirements. These systems also incorporate pre-installed cable harnesses, DIN rails, and terminal blocks, and sometimes integrated electronics.

Wired Assemblies and Custom Layouts

In addition to cabinets, cases, enclosures, and junction boxes, we also provide cable harnesses and trays, fittings, control panels, wired electrical assemblies, and custom layout services. Depending on customer specifications, we also mount electrical instruments and components inside enclosures and cabinets, including circuit breakers, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), relays and contactors, terminal blocks, power supplies and transformers, motor drives, and surge protection devices.

Materials and Environmental Performance

Enclosures can be fabricated from a variety of materials, depending on the details of the application, including:

  • Operating conditions such as indoor or outdoor use, exposed/visible or protected/hidden installations, or placement in confined, elevated, or remote settings.
  • Weather and environmental exposure including UV radiation, salt spray, chemicals, dust, high winds, humidity, etc.
  • Security concerns including the need for tamper-resistant, locking mechanisms.
  • Temperature ranges and/or fluctuations.
  • Ventilation requirements for thermal management as well as airflow
  • Dimensions, shape, and aesthetic requirements.
  • Hazard exposure including fire, chemicals, or explosives.

We work with a variety of materials that provide physical security, durability, structural strength, and environmental protection. Common options include:

  • Stainless steel.
  • Powder-coated carbon steel.
  • Aluminum.
  • Fiberglass.
