Characteristics of NEMA 6P Enclosures
As indicated above, NEMA 6P enclosures are designed for use in indoor and outdoor non-hazardous locations—i.e., environments that are not regularly exposed to flammable or explosive compounds. When properly installed, they offer a degree of protection against the following:
- Ingress of solid or liquid foreign objects, such as dust, debris, snow, and water
- External ice formation
- Corrosion
- Prolonged submersion (in limited depths)
NEMA 6 vs. NEMA 6P
Some NEMA ratings have several subsets. For example, there are two NEMA 6 ratings—NEMA 6 and NEMA 6P. The main difference between the two ratings is the addition of protection against corrosion and damage from prolonged submersion. While both NEMA 6 and NEMA 6P enclosures protect against weather conditions and common environmental contaminants, only the latter offers protection against corrosion and submersion.
The Basics of NEMA Ratings
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) is an industrial group representing almost 325 electrical appliance and medical imaging equipment manufacturers that serve seven major markets: building systems, building infrastructure, industrial products and systems, lighting systems, medical imaging, transportation systems, and utility products and systems. The organization publishes standards to ensure the quality and consistency of the products manufactured by its member companies.
NEMA ratings describe the suitability of electrical enclosures for particular environments, with classifications ranging from NEMA 1 to NEMA 13. NEMA 1 to 6, 12, and 13 are suitable for use in non-hazardous locations, while NEMA 7 to 10 are used in hazardous environments. Additionally, NEMA 1 to 6 enclosures are for indoor and outdoor use, while NEMA 12 and 13 enclosures are only for indoor use. Beyond these general use cases, the various ratings indicate different degrees of protection from environmental conditions.
