Railings define spaces, create barriers against hazards, and keep pedestrians and cyclists safe on walkways, stairs, and streets. There are many material, design, and aesthetic options to choose from, which is why it’s important to work with a railing fabrication expert with the capabilities and experience to bring your railing project to life. Fabricated Railings from Selco

Fabricated metal railings are manufactured in sections, then transported to the site for final assembly and installation. The fabrication process involves cutting, bending, notching, welding, and sometimes additional finishing processes, including grinding, painting, powder coating, or anodizing.

Railing systems can be a series of free-standing panels, interconnected sections, or a combination. They can be made to different heights, with different materials to block wind or permit normal airflow, and with mixed materials for durability and decorative effects. Railings may be constructed and installed along with an entirely new structure, or added at a later time.

Railing Fabrication Materials

Choosing the right material for a railing project depends on where and how it will be used, whether it will incorporate decorative elements or be strictly utilitarian, as well as considerations like cost and project timeline.

Selco has extensive experience and knowledge in fabricating railings in a variety of materials, including:

  • Stainless Steel. Offering high corrosion resistance and low maintenance requirements, stainless steel is a durable and functional choice. It is available in different grades, such as 304 or 316, depending on the application. Stainless steel works well in mixed material projects that include other metals, brick, concrete, blockwork, and timber.
  • Galvanized Steel. Galvanization protects steel from the corrosive effects of moisture and weather. Standard galvanized steel has a silver or gray appearance but can be finished with other colors as well.
  • Aluminum. With its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, aluminum is very easy to fabricate and lightweight when installed. However, it is also more susceptible to bending and abrasion than steel and usually requires more vertical members to increase railing strength. Aluminum is highly corrosion resistant, and through an electrochemical process called anodization, a wide range of attractive color and finishing options are available.

Railing and Handrail Applications

High-quality railing is used in many ways from stair and bridge railings to leading-edge protection on walking or work platforms. They also define work and traffic flow patterns and restrict access to hazardous areas. Some common applications include:

  • Marine Applications
  • Bridges
  • Stairways
  • Pedestrian Overpasses and Footbridges
  • Sidewalks and bikeways
  • ADA-compliant access ramps
  • Transit Stations
  • Retaining walls and Civic Spaces
